VIDEO: Refugees move from camps to apartments

Video produced by Danny Mortimer
The UN is pushing for the Greek government to move Syrian refugees out of camps and into autonomous apartments. It’s an attempt to integrate them into Greek society. Still, life in apartments can be difficult for Syrian families. Many feel neglected by the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that placed them there. The conditions of the apartments, while better than the camps, are not always sanitary. Furniture is not always provided. On top of that, refugee families can be subjected to discrimination by the members of the community that they are dropped into. Many of these families came from their homes to seek asylum in other countries across Europe. They feel trapped in Greece, unable to move on to more financially stable countries where better job opportunities and school systems await them.
